Vol.1 - I Remember The Homesteads

Published on: Sat, 21 Jun 2008 19:34:35 -0700

This is the first volume, of hopefully, a series of clips of interviews and stories told by the folks who grew up and lived in my community, the Cumberland Homesteads, Tn. The Homesteads was one of the 102 communities that the U.S. Government built during the New Deal to help families recover from the Great Depression. Each of these communities were unique, the Cumberland Homesteads had 250 small farms on a 10,000 acre tract of cut-over timberland. This community is known as the Showplace of the New Deal and is now the largest National Register Historic District in Tennessee. Unfortunately, it is also recognized as one of the Ten Most Endangered Historic Sites in TN, as unchecked new development is changing the historic land use and context of the planned farming community. Volumes 1 & 2 are a visit to my antique shop by Bill Huddleston who was in town visiting family. He stopped in to see my mom and I and to tell us about a book he is writing of his memories of growing up here. I must thank David Campbell, of Canada for giving me the encouragement to film this type of visit. David can be found in my friend's list and if you will go to his page, you will find a treasure load of his creative works that warm your heart! These "volumes" will be added as the opportunities present themselves and without elaborate editing. Just plain folks telling the stories of their lives in their own words. To learn more about the Cumberland Homesteads visit www.cumberlandhomesteads.org or visit the Homesteads Tower Museum at the junction of U.S. 127 S and State Route 68 - 4 miles south of Crossville, TN.
